How can I restore my wallet?
Restoring a wallet on Bitkit is fast. However, you need to pay attention to critical steps depending on if you're
restoring your wallet on the same or on a different device.
Migrating to a new device
You should never use the same wallet with the same recovery phrase on two or more devices simultaneously. Using the same
wallet on different devices may cause synchronization issues, which could result in data corruption and loss of funds.
To migrate your wallet from an old to a new device, first check if you've backed up your recovery phrase properly.
On your old device, go to Security and Privacy menu on Settings to check if your data was backed up properly. Click to
retry in case there's any backup missing.
If the backups are all done, Reset and restore wallet.
Now, you're ready to restore your wallet on your new device.
Note: If your previous device was stolen or lost, you should move your funds to a new wallet as soon as possible. As
long as no one else access your wallet simultaneously on another device, you'll be able to restore it and send out your
funds without losing data or your spending balance.
Restoring your wallet
With your backups at hand, accept the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, click on Skip intro, and Restore.
Make sure to enter your recovery phrase correctly and in the order that you backed them up. If you write the words in a
different order, a new wallet will be created with an empty balance.
Restoring a recovery phrase generated by a different wallet
You can restore seed phrases that weren't generated by Bitkit, but there are a few caveats.
Bitkit supports BIP 39
You can only restore wallets from 12-words BIP 39 seed phrases. This means you won't be able to restore wallets derived
from 24-word mnemonics.
We only support 12-word recovery phrases because we believe that, for hot wallets, the extra security provided
by 24-word mnemonics is not enough to justify doubling the difficulty of backing up correctly. People usually lose their
funds because they lost their recovery phrases, and 12-word mnemonics are half as easy to back up despite being equally
impossible to guess as 24 words in practice.
Since Bitkit uses BIP 39, you won't be able to restore seed phrases generated through other standards, such as the
Electrum Seed Version System or aezeed.
You can't restore wallets from extended private keys such as xprv, yprv, and zprv. Also, Bitkit wasn't designed to be a
watch-only wallet, so you can't import extended public keys either.
Bitkit support passphrases
You can enter as many characters as you prefer. However, be cautious that other wallets might have restrictions on the
number and types of characters allowed. Therefore, if your passphrase is too long or unconventional, it might pose
difficulties if you ever wish to access your funds from Bitkit.
Bitkit uses standard derivation paths
Bitkit supports Legacy (P2PKH), Nested Segwit (P2SH), and Native Segwit Bech32 (P2WPKH) addresses and derives them
through the standard paths according to BIP 44 (m/44'/0'/0'), BIP 49 (m/49'/0'/0'), and BIP 84 (m/84'/0'/0'). That is,
if your wallet uses a custom derivation path, you won't be able to restore it on Bitkit.
Bitkit doesn't yet support Taproot (P2TR) addresses, so you won't be able to generate bc1p receiving addresses. Also, if
you're restoring a recovery phrase used on a different wallet and you had a balance on taproot addresses, it won't
appear on your Bitkit wallet. This doesn't mean your funds on Taproot addresses would be lost, it just means that Bitkit
isn't capable of identifying them.
Bitkit can't restore external Lightning wallets
You can only restore Lightning wallets created on Bitkit. You can't restore other lightning wallets on Bitkit because,
among other reasons, the connection backups and recovery phrase might be incompatible. If you want to migrate your funds
from a different Lightning wallet, you'll need to send it all and receive on Bitkit, as a usual Lightning payment.
Restoring a recovery phrase generated by Bitkit on a different wallet
You can also restore your Bitkit wallet in any wallet that supports BIP 39. However, if you have funds on your Spending
balance, you'll need to transfer them back to your savings before restoring, otherwise they won't show up on the wallet
you restore on.
